I'm 99% positive it isn't the stovepipe as I believe the stove was next to the chimney before on the other side of the room. I can see where the exhaust went into the chimney previously.

At first I didn't think it was a laundry shoot, but I didn't even think of the fact that clothes were washed in the kitchen before. The hole opened up above a long and narrow pantry like area at the back of the kitchen. So it very well could have been the location for the dirty clothes.

I would be it was a laundry shoot? washing used to be done in the kitchen where hot water from the stove could be at the ready. Just a guess.

I also vote former stovepipe - though it could also have been a dumbwaiter (is that how you spell that? Dunno).

I have one of these too! It is also in a closet. It goes up through the dining room and into my closet (which has a scuttle hole into the attic.

My best guess is that it is a passage for a stove pipe that might have at one time connected to the chimney (I no longer have a chimny in this house and we never had a fireplace). When I had the new sheetrock put in I had them go over this, forever covering it until a homeowner down the road uncovers it and wonders the same thing!

Oh my gosh! You guys are troopers for dealing with all of that... The little door in the ceiling is super-cool - you gotta love old houses for having hidden secrets like this!

Thanks again for the nice comments the other day... I think we're going to end up moving! I'm definitely not opposed to living in a small city/town (in fact, your comments make it sound quite appealing), I just worry that there will be very limited job opportunities for me, since I work in a pretty specialized field. Ahh, well, why not give it a shot, right? :)
